June 10, 2018
The Cardinals losing streak has been extended to seven games to start the 2018 season as they dropped games to Swift Current and Regina on Friday and Saturday night respectively.
On Friday June 8 the Swift Current 57’s were in town to complete a two game series. In the first inning Swift Current took advantage of two walks and a deep three run home run by Bo McClintock to take an early 3-0 lead. Starting pitcher Ryan Thrasher settled down to only allow one run in the next three innings but struggled to find the strike zone throughout. He would be saddled with the loss. Austin Skelhorn would come in relief and allow two runs over four innings while Logan MacDougall would throw a scoreless top of nine. The Cards only allowed five hits but ten walks and the inability to generate much offence cost them.
Thirus Jones continued his good start to the season with a pair of hits, as did Ryne Niemi with an rbi double. Gage Buck also had a single as the Cards could only muster up four hits off of the 57’s Zach Bravo
On Saturday June 10 the Cards once again struggled at the dish as they only had five hits off a trio of Red Sox pitchers and could only manage one run in a 10-1 defeat.
Thirus Jones, Ryne Niemi, Colin Kellington, Gage Buck and Logan MacDougall all recorded one hit. MacDougall had the lone rbi on a sacrifice fly.
Starting pitcher Dillon Champagne tossed five innings allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits, three walks and eight strikeouts to eventually take the loss. Chris Cook came in relief and only allowed one earned run and two hits over three innings. With the game out of hand and a depleted pitching staff outfielder Ryne Niemi came in to pitch the top of the ninth.
With the two losses the Cardinals start the season 0-7. However there will be an influx of players arriving over the course of the next week as they are just finishing up their schooling or Collegiate seasons. The Cardinals had fourteen players available for these first seven games so they look forward to seeing what the new talent brings to the table.
The Cards will be in action this afternoon at 2:05 PM in Weyburn vs the Beavers. Local product Tyson Black is expected to get his first start of the season on the mound.
