June 12, 2018
In the early part of the 2018 season the Cardinals offence was fairly silent as the team batting average remained below the Mendoza line. But the last few games the bats have woken up and the Cards have taken advantage of opportunities. On June 12 in Melville, the trend continued as the Cardinals put up six runs in the second and third innings to cruise to a 15-2 victory.
The Cards managed fifteen runs on ten hits but drew nine walks and took advantage of four timely Mils errors to put the game out of reach early. Clyde Yeh (3B, Barry University) kept up his torrid start with a single, double, home run and four rbi to lead the Cardinals attack. Dillon Champagne (1B, Salem International U) and Riley Jepson (RF, U of Fraser Valley) both had a single and a double. Ryne Niemi extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single, while Jayse Wilson and Gage Buck recorded a single each.
The pitching was handled by two players from the University of Calgary: Owen Steele and Logan MacDougall. Steele was lights out tossing seven innings while allowing just one earned run, four hits and seven strikeouts to get the win. MacDougall pitched the final two innings and gave up just one run and two hits.
With the win the Cardinals record sits at 2-8, still last in the WMBL Eastern Division but in striking distance of the third place Regina Red Sox, who they will play next on Thursday June 14 in Regina at 7:05
