In 2004, a pair of up and coming baseball players from UC Riverside made their way to Yorkton to play summer collegiate baseball. By 2009 both had made it to Major League Baseball. They were Anthony Claggett (https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/claggan01.shtml) and Dan Runzler (https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/runzlda01.shtml). Claggett was a starting middle infielder and came out of the pen with the Cardinals. Runzler was a mainstay in the Cardinals starting rotation.
Claggett’s MLB tenure was shortlived, but he got the opportunity to pitch at Yankee Stadium. He is now an assistant coach with the New Mexico State baseball team. Congrats Anthony!
Runzler’s MLB career started in San Francisco, as he pitched there between 2009 and 2012. In 89 games with the Giants, Runzler was 4-2 with a 3.86 ERA.
After several years in the minors, Runzler made his way back to MLB with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He made 8 relief appearances with a 4.50 ERA over four innings.
The Cardinals wish Dan the best of luck in 2018 and beyond!
