On Monday June 18 the Swift Current 57’s made their second trip in as many weeks to Yorkton for back to back games with the Cards. After five innings the game was tied at one as a pitchers duel between Tommy Steier and the Cards Wryland McKnight was taking place. However in the top of the sixth the wheels fell off as the 57’s put six runs on the board and never looked back in a 12-1 victory.
McKnight (Western Oregon University) was the lone bright spot on the evening allowing just one earned run in five innings on just four hits and four walks.
Dillon Champagne (Salem International University) led the Cardinals with two singles and an rbi.
The following evening the 57’s started off strong by taking a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning, and it looked like the Cardinals would suffer a similar fate. But after two walks and two hit batters, Griffey Halle came up with a clutch two rbi single to bring the deficit to one. In the bottom of four Champagne tied the game with his third home run of the season, followed by an rbi triple by Thirus Jones (Salem International) for the Cards to take the lead for good and hold on for an 8-6 win.
Jared McDonald (Western Oregon U) had another impressive day at the plate with a single, double and two rbi’s to lead the offence. Logan Zozaya (Lane Community College) had two hits and an rbi while Halle had two hits.
Ryan Thrasher started on the hill and struggled to command the strike zone. He lasted 2 2/3 innings before giving way to Andrew Cisneros, Jake Gill, Parker Hubbard and Austin Skelhorn. Jake Gill would eventually pick up the win as he continues his great start to the season.
In the top of the 9th the 57’s got the tying run to first base but Skelhorn slammed the door to give the Cards their fourth win on the season to improve to four wins and ten losses.
The Cardinals are back at it Thursday, June 21st at Jubilee Park vs the Regina Red Sox
