June 6, 2018
On the morning of Wednesday, June 6 the Cardinals hosted the Melville Mils in front of 600 loud, screaming young students. The Cardinals made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth as they loaded the bases and had the tying run up to bat with none out, but could not get any further as they fell 10-6.
Jake Gill (University of the Fraser Valley) and Chris Cook (University of Calgary) shared the pitching duties. Gill threw 3 2/3 innings allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits, four walks with seven strikeouts to take the loss. Chris Cook came in relief tossing 5 1/3 innings allowing eight hits and five earned runs with no walks.
The Cards offence was able to generate six runs on eight hits, highlighted by a three run homer by Thirus Jones (Salem International University) and a solo shot by Dillon Champagne (Salem International University). Jayse Wilson (Strathmore, AB) had two singles, two runs, a walk and a stolen base. Also getting hits were Colin Kellington (Chilliwack, BC), Ryne Niemi (Adams State University), Matt Zanutto (University of Calgary) and Cook.
The Cards were given extra opportunities by drawing seven walks and three hit batters, but just could not cash in enough times. With the loss the Cardinals fall to 0-4 on the season. The next home game is Thursday, June 7 as the defending WMBL Champion Swift Current 57’s come to town for a 7:05 PM first pitch
A big thank you to the Co-op for providing all the food, beverages and volunteers for the game. Also a big thank you to all of the students from Yorkdale, Dr. Brass, St. Paul’s, St. Michael’s, Canora, Churchbridge, Saltcoats and Sturgis on making this another great event! The Yorkton Cardinals players and staff look forward to this game each and every year!
