The Cardinals were finally able to beat Mother Nature, although she put up a pretty good fight with some threatening clouds at the beginning of the game and a half hour rain delay in the middle. The game eventually went the full nine innings, but the Cards were not able to beat the Weyburn Beavers in a 7-3 defeat.
Dillon Champagne (Livonia, MI) was the starting pitcher and threw five innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits, three walks and five strikeouts. He left with the game tied at two. Andrew Cisneros came in relief giving up two runs on four hits and two strikeouts to eventually take the loss. Austin Skelhorn tossed the final two innings allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
Offensively the Cards could only manage four hits off of a tough Beavers pitching staff. Matt Zanuto (U of Calgary) led the way with a double, while Chris Cook (U of Calgary), Gage Buck (Prairie Baseball Academy) and Jake Gill (U of the Fraser Valley) each had a single.
It was a see-saw affair until the top of the eighth when a three run home run by Weyburn’s Cam Williams gave the Beavers some breathing room while never looking back. With the loss the Cards fall to 0-3 on the season. The next game will be on Wednesday at 11:05 AM, June 6
as the Melville Millionaires come to Jubilee Park to take part in the third annual kids day game. It is always a great atmosphere as the kids are loud and enthusiastic. We hope to see another huge, noisy crowd!
